Myanmar completes final stage of widely criticized elections

(MENAFN) Polling has concluded in Myanmar after the third and final stage of an election widely criticized as a sham.

Many popular parties were barred from participating, and voting was impossible in large parts of the country due to a five-year civil war. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is expected to claim a decisive victory. The ruling junta has dismissed international criticism, insisting the election was free and fair.

Around one-fifth of the nation’s 330 townships, including Yangon and Mandalay, took part in this last round. Six parties, including the USDP, fielded candidates nationwide, while 51 other parties and independents contested state and regional seats. The previous rounds, held on 28 December and 11 January, gave overwhelming wins to the USDP, which had only secured 6% of parliamentary seats in the last free election of 2020.

In Nyaungshwe, Shan State, voting was calm and orderly. A news agency team observed voters at a large school shaded by rain trees, where volunteers and officials guided people in using new locally-made electronic voting machines.
